Practical information for Greenland

Itinerary
Day 1: Departure Copenhagen (Kastrup) at 09.00. Arrival Kangerlussuaq at 09.40. You will be met in the airport by the outfitter. Transfer by helicopter to the hunting area. Accommodation and zeroing of the rifle.

Day 2-4: Hunting on foot for musk ox, pls note the hunt is for 2 musk ox. If you are lucky to get an opportunity of shooting a caribou during the hunt it is also an option. But this is not included in the package. If you shoot a caribou before your 2nd musk ox, the caribou can be exchanged with the licence of your 2nd ox. The caribou can be quite a distance away from camp 20-35 km, so caribou hunting requires that you are really fit..

Day 4: Transfer back to Kangerlussuaq helicopter.

Day 5: Departure from Kangerlussuaq at 13.10. Arrival Copenhagen at 21.30. We make reservations for changes in the Air Greenland timetable, but if any occurs, we will let You know. Please also note that the weather often can cause delays for Air Greenland.

Check-in
Latest check- in in Copenhagen Airport is 1 hour before departure but when travelling with firearms you should calculate 2½ hours.Check-in on-line on www.airgreenland.com is possible but You still
needs to be there 2½ hours before to check in Yours weapon/s. Air Greenland departs from Terminal 2 in Copenhagen Airport.

Excess Luggage
You are allowed to bring a maximum of 20 kilos luggage on the plane (including your rifle), and 8 kilos of hand luggage in the cabin free. If more than 20 kilos of ordinary luggage is carried, you
may be charged for the overweight. Transport of Weapon and Ammunition by Air: Weapons should be carried in a solid hard case. Ammunition and bolt must not be carried in the rifle case, but in another luggage, which must be checked in (therefore not in the hand luggage).

PLEASE NOTE: it is no longer legal to transport ammunition in original packing. All ammunition must be kept in a lockable metal ammunition box to be checked in separately with own baggage tag.
Bolt should be carried separately in the suitcase holding all your clothes - NEVER in your hand luggage. Weapon, parts of weapon, sighting scope, ammunition, knifes etc. are NOT PERMITTED
in your hand luggage.

Please bring your EU weapon passport if you are an EU citizen.

Please note that airlines are entitled to charge a fee for handling your weapon, (the fee vary from airline to airline, approx. € 100per weapon), as well as charging for overweight when travelling
with weapon.

IMPORTANT!!
In certain airports an extra inspection in regards to weapon and ammunition has been imposed, which can result in passengers having to point out the luggage tag belonging to their weapon and
which to the ammunition. This will most likely take place at the gate in transit airports, for example when connecting from one flight to another, in Frankfurt f. inst. Therefore it is VERY
IMPORTANT that passengers - at check-in - are aware of which luggage tag belongs to the weapon and which to the ammunition. In case passengers are not able to do so, the consequence could be
that the luggage will simply not be loaded on to the aircraft.

Weapon
For the musk ox hunting you have to use a rifle - with minimum calibre 30-06. It is recommendable to bring 1 box of cartridges. Should you need a tourist or business visa you can contact a Danish embassy near you to find out more. Normally, short stay visas issued by Danish missions abroad are valid for the entire Schengen region. Tourist visas does not allow you to work in Denmark. A Danish visa is also valid for Greenland.

Spouses and children of EU and EEA nationals (providing spouse’s passport and the original marriage certificate/proof of joint household are produced), and nationals of some other countries, if
related directly, may receive visas free of charge. For detailed assistance and visa application questions, contact a Danish embassy near you. The information shown here does not constitute legal advice in any way and you are strongly advised to contact an immigration attorney for binding advice on visas.

Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months on entry into Greenland

Currency
The Danish krone is used in Greenland. There are banks in all major cities and you can also change at local hotels.

Insurance
Please note that our travel and cancellation insurance also includes hunting liability. Since a hunting liability insurance is required, you must have such an insurance. We assume that you have a valid
hunting licence, which is a condition for you being covered by the insurance. For citizens outside the EU we can only offer cancellation insurance, so pls. contact your own insurance company.

Camp Order
It should be unnecessary to mention the point camp order, as we assume that all participants are nature lovers and therefore would not leave litter in the area. However there is reason to mention
that the nature of Greenland is a lot more vulnerable than our own. The fauna must thrive on rough conditions, which means that damages done to the nature heal up slowly. The camp is based on
everybody helping, when possible, so that the camp functions in the best possible way.

Sanitary Conditions:
Water can be heated in the kitchen, but there are only very limited conditions. Toilet visits are made outdoor without problems.

Personal Equipment
The equipment list below would be suitable for Greenland travellers, but can of course be composed as you like - however, please go through the list in any case. Do not bring more than absolutely
necessary - the rest will only be in the way. Baggage that you do not need in the camp, can be left in Kangerlussuaq.

Equipment List

  • Sleeping bag - winter model. Should be comfortable at temperatures down to -5°C. Please note that the manufacturers often promise too much.
  • Wind- and water proof trousers and jacket

    weather situation.

  • Bring boots that “can take you the necessary miles”.

Climate
The climate of Greenland is arctic, and the Greenlandic weather is rather changeable, especially at the coast.

In March/April, when the dog sledge hunts are taking place, you may expect daily temperatures down to -40°C. However, the temperatures will more likely be around -25 and -30C and somewhat
colder at night. Usually you will have a clear sky with sunshine. Almost always dry and pleasant. Winds, clouds or snow are seldom. The weather in August/September is milder and goes down to -3°C.

Important Considerations About Greenland’s Weather
Please be aware the the weather plays a very important part in just about all outdoors activities in Greenland. It is the arctic here, and the weather can change dramatically from one moment to the next - sunshine and calm weather can change to a snowstorm in only a few minutes. Fog, wind and ice conditions can all also present problems. Therefore it is important that you are prepared for the fact that the weather can exert a major influence on any tour here, and that the local outfitter can be forced to change the program to ensure the safety of all the people involved. This may mean, for example, that you will be forced to stay where you are - no matter where that may be - until the weather has improved again. This can also mean, for example, a hunting day or two less than was planned.

DIANA and the local outfitter cannot be held responsible for any changes in the program that may be necessary because of the weather. It is important for us to point out that safety is of prime importance, no matter what. However, it must also be mentioned that the local outfitter has a more or less free hand to change the plans, to take into account the actual possibilities available on the day. This can mean, for example, that it may not be possible to embark on a seal hunt because of the wind, therefore he will arrange a hare- or ptarmigan shoot instead.

In other words it can be difficult to stick to a fixed itinerary on a hunting tour to Greenland. If the weather is good, everything will go as planned, but if something unexpected happens you will typically get a different experience than the one you had planned. It is part of the adventure of travelling in this part of the world, where the infrastructure is such that it can’t always handle any situation.

It may also be the case that, because of the weather, you will arrive to late at the airport to catch your flight. This is a situation that neither we or our customers can insure themselves against. Naturally we will do everything we can to help in these situations, but basically we can not offer to pay for, for example, extra hotel accommodation etc.

If you cannot accept the above conditions, we recommend that you should choose another destination.

Flight Delays
It may occur that you are unable to arrive in- or depart Greenland on the day planned.

If your flight is delayed between Copenhagen and Greenland, or between Iceland and Greenland, (or vice versa) because of the weather or any technical problems, your accommodation costs will be covered until your flight can take off.

If you have another flight before or after your flight to/from Greenland, you need to be aware that typically flight tickets to Greenland cannot be combined with flight tickets to/from other destinations. This may have economic consequences in the case of a delay and unfortunately this is a situation that you cannot insure yourself against.

Therefore, we can only recommend that you either book a ticket to travel to/from Copenhagen that allows date changes - or at least allow plenty of time between flights to minimise any risks - we recommend allowing at least one in day before travelling to Greenland, and at least 2 days after returning from Greenland.

Customs Regulations
On arrival in Greenland you are allowed to carry alcohol, cigarettes or other kinds of tobacco according to the current rules. Please note that you will not be passing through the transit hall, when
you get back to Copenhagen. You are allowed to carry transit goods according to the current rules.

Import and Export of Rifles in DK
Please advise the personnel at the check in desk in Copenhagen Airport that you are bringing a weapon. The personnel will help you with the further clearance, but please be in good time as the
service can take some time. Please remember your hunting licence, firearms permit and EU-weapon passport. If you are not an EU-citizen, we will send you a white customs declaration form instead.

Import and Export of Rifles in Greenland
Please bring your EU weapon permit, hunting licence and firearms permit that must be shown on arrival in Greenland.

Import and Export of Trophies
It is not possible to bring the trophies back on the flight to Denmark. All skins and trophies will be shipped after the hunt. On departure from Greenland you will be taken to the freight terminal in airport, and Inuit Outfitting will assist you with the paperwork conc. Trophy shipment. The trophies will be flown to Nuuk (freight for this to be paid directly in the airport). From Nuuk trophies are
shipped with Royal Arctic Line to Aalborg in Denmark. From here they will organize shipment to your home address.

Please tell your hunting guide how you want the skin and the trophy. It is not possible to boil the trophies in Greenland, as the conditions in the camp are very primitive. Your trophy will be salted
and frozen. The skin will be dried and salted.

Preparation in your own Country
You and you alone, are responsible for the import of trophies to your own country. To import your trophy into your own country you must get in contact with your local veterinary authorities to find
out what is required. Please note that the musk ox is not an endangered species and is not on the Washington Convention List.

Gratuities
The size of gratuities are of course always up to the individual hunter, but we can inform that it is customary to pay around EUR 100-120 per trophy to your guide and handler.

Physical Condition
The musk ox hunt isn’t very demanding, but if you get the chance of caribou, they tend to be further away from the camp nad you must be prepared for long walks.

Emergency Phone
DIANA has established an emergency phone service, whereby our clients can reach us 24 hours a day - 7 days a week - and talk to a competent member of our staff. We would like to stress that this
service is intended for emergency calls only, where contact with DIANA is vital. Please feel free to use this line, when absolutely necessary, but please do also avoid any unnecessary calls.

Return
We ALWAYS appreciate hearing from you after your return home. It is of the utmost importance for us to know, what happens "out there". This is the only way, we can develop and possibly improve our hunting tours. Therefore - whether you wish to praise or criticize - please let us hear from you!

We would always be very pleased to receive a nice photo from your hunt. We hope that this will answer the questions you may have before the trip. Should you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
